First vacuum it well and then spray Febreeze on your carpet, let it dry and then vacuum again.

Various brands of powder are available that you can sprinkle onto the carpet, then vacuum it up, so it removes most/nearly all of the odor depending on the severity. If it is really bad you may have to do it several times or have it steam cleaned.

Arm & Hammer makes a line of carpet deodorizers.

I would recommended cleaning your carpets and using a disinfectant like Milgo SR (may need to go to a janitorial supply store for this and ask for a disinfectant for carpet) and put it in the rinse water. Deodorizers just cover up the smell for a while and disinfectant kill bacteria in the carpet.

Please DO NOT put anything on the carpet that was not made for carpet

baking soda mixed with laundry soap or vinegar smells bad at first but then the vinegar smell goes away
