If you are planning to have a baby, is there a way a special doctor would find out if your med probs or emotional probs would be passed on to the baby or not?

Because you really don't want it to.

You need to see a geneticist, they specialize in this field. I don't know about emotional problems, but there are plenty of tests that can be done to see if you have any genes that would definitely cause a problem for your child.

Your obstetrician or family doctor should be able to give you a referral. Good luck.

There are a number of ailments (think there are some 500 + ) that can be tested while the baby is still in the womb.

However most of these will require some invasive treatment that sometimes, and depending on the specifics, be harmful to the baby. E.g. amniotic fluid samples, or more risky, specific fluids (i.e. spinal) from the baby

Your paediatrician should be able to give you all the help you need..

Good luck though, now easy choices here
:-)

It depends on the problems. Some health problems are passed on but others aren't. There are various tests that can be done but not all problems can be tested for. You would need to discuss this with your doctor. Emotional problems generally are not passed on as these occur due to dysfuncion in the environment you are raised in. Make sure you are in a stable relationship, and are financially and emotionally stable yourself, before having a baby and chances are you will be in a position to raise an emotionally healthy child.

You can get an amniocentesis done which is when a small amount of amniotic fluid, which contains the baby's DNA, is taken out and analyzed. This will tell you all sorts of things about the baby such as the sex of the baby and any genetic disorders such as downs syndrome that it may have.

I don't remember exactly how far along I was but they do offer testing for birth defects and such. They have to stick a needle through your tummy to get at the baby and draw blood (or maybe it's the ammniotic fluid they test, I forget). I didn't bother with that, I knew I'd love and care for my baby regardless. Would you abort if you knew your baby would be born with a defect? If yes, do the test, if not, don't bother.

They may be able to do genetic testing through amniocentesis. I don't know if they can find markers for mental disorders, but I know that they can find genetic markers for physical defects like congenital heart conditions, certain cancers, and cystic fibrosis.

Talk to your doctor and see if there is such a procedure.

If the medical issues were genetic, then yes you could pay to have your baby screened, although you couldn't have baby screened for all possible issues because thats just impossible and you can't screen for depression or emotional problems.

You would need to get a consult for genetics testing with you and the father. Still that can only give you a percentage. Nothing is guaranteed.
