Romeo and Juliet both committed suicide. Romeo poisoned himself, the upon waking up and finding him dead, Juliet took his dagger and stabbed herself.

Shakespeare's play is based on the story of Pyramus and Thisbe from Ovid's "Metamorphisis" (a Roman poem, written around 48 CE). In that, Pyramus finds Thisbe's veil torn apart by a lion, and thinking that she had been killed by the lion kills himself. Then Thisbe found him dead under a mulberry tree and killed herself. Maybe that's what you're thinking of with the animal?

No, Romeo drank poison and Juliet stabbed herself...the exact lines are, "...O true apothecary,
thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die." (5.3 lines 120-21)
Juliet upon awakening from her drug induced sleep sees Romeo and the vial and guesses the truth,
"O churl, drunk all and left no friendly drop
to help me after?...
...Yea noise? then I'll be brief. O happy dagger.
This is thy sheath-there rust and let me die."
(5.3 lines 170-71/177-78)

They both drank poison. Youth has killed Shakespeare and English literature just by lack of interest and education.
