The cons are, it results in the destruction of fertilized eggs that, if implanted, wouold likely develop into a human being. Eggs that are surplus from in vitro clinics that would otherwise be destroyed anyway! Why not get some use out of them?

1. Embryonic Stem Cell research destroys a human embryo. Adult stem cell research does not.
2. People are not fetuses. They do not have embryonic stem cells anymore - and the only way to get more (genetically identical) would be through human cloning (imagine - so many failed human clones trying to perfect the process... gross!) Adult stem cells are easilly obtained.

Well, what type of stem cell research are you talking about?
Adult SCR is going along fine, with new treatments for diseases coming regularly.
Placental & Blood SCR are also moving along, with much near-term potential.
Embryonic SCR is still a ways off from developing any treatments, and it also raises the ethical questions regarding destroying human life for scientific pursuit.

If it can be done without killing, and it can, than it is awesome. Curing the blind, those who can walk, and diseases being eliminated? That is a wonderful thing.
