You are on to something. But part of the problem is not ignorance but apathy. Many people simply do not care about other people's faith's, unless it differs from theirs in public. Faith has become an issue of right and wrong rather than love and kindness.

I see many faiths preaching, but still hating all things contrary. Watch your local or national news. The social defenders of faith are preditors on freedom. I can't go see a movie because it depicts Jesus laying with Mary but I can see His "Passion." I can't listen to a song because "...God was one of us riding on a bus," but I can hear "God is Love" all day long.

Is the real question ignorance, or is it intolerance? Or, could it be an issue of fear and power?

You are so right!
In a Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, all people are welcome regardless of faith or background. Sharing ideas and asking questions is encouraged. Blind faith is not something that is imposed on anyone. UU's have no doctrine or creed, other than the respect, tolerance, and acceptance of diversity. No UU's seek to convert anyone, because there would be nothing to convert them to.
Freemasonry is similar in that it respects and tolerates, though it is an organization for men only, and those men must have faith in God (which faith does not matter).
Most people who are prejudiced or discriminatory are merely afraid of things they do not know, cannot understand, ot cannot control. Homophobes, fanatics, supremecists, all fear diversity. Their fear is projected outwardly, through hate and other negativity.
I agree, we all should ne enlightened to cultural and religious diversity. Maybe a requirement in high school should be a "Various Theologies" course or something, with an overview of various faiths. Maybe that way we would not be so fearful of diversity....

you know i agree with you whole heartedly but i also would like to add that how you were raised while growing up says alot too. Children who grow up in a famiily that believe certain values that the world (in general) doesnt agree with.. will more than likely have the same views of their elders.
it all starts with home training & knowing the difference between right & wrong. being able to overcome & adapt.

you hit the nail on the head honey. if people would stop being so arrogant thinking that their way is the only way maybe they could open their eyes to the wonders of other cultures an lose some of the ignorance that abounds in our world

You are right. So many problems arise from cultural misunderstandings.
