Depends on what kind of guitar you are talking about. Some date back to around 5,000 years ago. Obviously, these would be considered acoustic guitars. Leo Fender and Les Paul were two of the original inventors of the solid body electric guitar. This was around 1952-53.

The six-string guitar is credited to Gaetano Vinaccia. He created this in 1779.

Guitars go back over 5,000 years and records had not beept about who invented what and when. All civilizations have their own derivation of stringed instruments.

The older blues guitar players used cat intestines for strings. I imagine that other animals gave up their innards in the pursuit of music too. They gave up their skins for drums, which is why "skins" is a slang term for drums.
