- Microphone has been centered.
- Stylus holder has been relocated to make it a little more discreet.
- Larger stylus for better grip.
- Smaller directional pad.
- Triggers on back even with case, as opposed to slightly extended on the original, to prevent accidental triggering during game play.
- All buttons are more pronounced for easier play.
- Longer battery life, although dependant on brightness settings and is decreased with Wi-Fi usage.
- "Weather stripping" over the game port to prevent dust damage, also allows game cartriges to fit more snuggly.
- Available in 3 colors (white, black and pink), as opposed to only one (blue) for the orginal.

The difference is this:
Nintendo DS was created first, it's also quite heavy for people to hold for long periods of time. The company figured this out a little too late, so it thought it'd correct the mistake. Instead of taking away the DS it marketed out the DS lite version. The DS lite is the same thing except it supposedly has better lights for the background and also is lighter than the DS version.

NDS Lite is more comfortable to hold. It's more comfortable than the previous version. NDS Lite's light is also brighter and it has 4 choices of brightness, so you don't have to squint. The first NDS has only 2 choices. The stylus in NDS Lite is much comfortable to hold too. It's slightly bigger and longer than the first NDS which is smaller and shorter. In other words, get the newer version because the newer and improved ones are always much better than the older. Hope this helps.

The DS lite is smaller than the DS but is more expensive since it's newer.
Performance-wise there's no difference between the two.
