If they are really wet,, and you do this more than once weekly it will rot your banister. In between laundry days give a good taste of oil, like liquid gold....That will make the banister last forever...Try putting a sheet or towel between banister and wet clothes....

I don't think it is a good idea to put wet clothes on the banister. Yes over time, it will make the color of the banister lighter than it was before. If it is varnished properly then water will not seep through the wood but like I said, it will lighten up after some time and you might need to put on another coat which equals extra work. Or sometimes it might get on your clothes!

Instead get a drying rack they only cost about 20 bucks at bed bath and beyond when they are on sale. Or ofcourse putting them in a dryer is the best solution.

Yes it will ruin the finish of the banister. Some paints are more waterproof than others and varnish isn't very waterproof at all. Ever notice how painted furniture starts to peel it it's left out in the rain?

Yes moisture into the wood will cause it to rot away. If you really need to hang in the house. Use your shower curtain rod or you can purchase a line that hangs in the shower and it can retract into place when not in use. Don't hang on wood or metal it will rot the wood and corroid the metal

yes, over time you will check the wood and have to refinish. if its an oiled banister you could stain your clothes, but if you have just damp clothing and the banister has a good finish on it, you'll be OK for awhile.

get a closet dowel and place it over something so you can use it...it won't hurt it.

The answer is if you did not ever let the wood dry, and kept it covered up it would rot, after a few years. But just drying clothes on it will maybe mess up the paint or stain the wood but it will not rot.

If the bannister is treated or varnished, wet clothes won't rot the wood, but they will discolor the varnish and make it lighter.

It's possible, but unlikely. Unless you do it ALL THE TIME. I think you'll just end up getting stains on the wood.
