How can I narrow my research topic down?

Question

Ok so I am doing a 8-10 page research paper. I want to do something along the lines of the descrimination against gay people. I really don't want to do gay marriage, but more of the horrible things that people do to gay people.

Please help with narrowing this down. I need to answer a specific question for this paper. Can someone give me some ideas for a thesis or specific research question?

What about the U.S. military and gay people? the whole..."don't ask, don't tell" thing.
