Please have the patience to read ALL of these:

1.Download CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ and run it once daily before shutting down your computer. It removes all the trash files that are created while surfing through the net. Use its Issues section once every 2 weeks to delete all the unused registry keys. If you have a lot of Auto Start entries, then you can remove them from its Tools>Startup. But keep the important ones like firewall and the real-time protection shields of your anti-virus and anti-spyware.

2.Keep a decent anti-virus, a strong firewall and two anti-spywares in your computer. Always keep the real time protection shield (or resident shield) of the anti-virus and one of the anti-spyware active. Update them and scan your computer once every week with both the anti-spyware and once every 2 weeks with anti-virus. I have given the links to some free and good anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall; get them all:
AVG: http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10596553.html?tag=lst-0-1
AdAware SE: http://www.download.com/ad-aware-se-pers...
SpyBot Search and Destroy: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/spy...
Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/d...

Never keep two anti-virus or firewall on a single system. If you are already using a good anti-virus or firewall, then you need not download the corresponding one. You can, however, use as many anti-spyware as you want.

3.Keep a virtual memory booster as an auto-start entry. It frees the clogged RAM. I use RAM Booster, which is very effective. Here is the link to download it:
http://www.download.com/rambooster/3000-...
After downloading it, follow the steps:
*. Click on Edit>Options and tick the follow options:
1.Set auto optimisation on
2.Show CPU usage
3.Start minimised
4.Launch automatically at start up
Also, increase the auto optimisation level and 'Mb of RAM to free at auto level' as per your requirement.

4.Keep at least 35% of your C: free. Transfer all the music, image and video files to other drives.

5.Defragment your hard drives (especially C:) once every month. To defrag, go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Defragment. It takes a lot of time (40 minutes or over) so don’t become impatient. It’s for your computer’s good.

6.Get the free Google Web Accelerator to boost up your Internet speed.

All these will most certainly speed up your computer. Good Luck!
:-)

Generally, mechanical parts lend themselves to wear over the months/years, and this is why most computers slow down even when you wipe them. However, within software there are a few possible reasons that can be fixed:

- The swap file could be being dumped to disk, if you use a lot of processor intensive programs like video editing or hard processing, and this space is not cleared

- Old files left from program uninstalls and resource components may be taking up space.

- Files on your hard drive may be fragmented, taking up space..

- There may be dust lodged in the interior components of the PC, causing slowdown, overheat or fire hazard. Use canned air to clean that out. (DON'T BREATHE canned air!)

- Insufficient power supply

Among many other things..

Well there could be a lot of problem causing it to slow down. so I'll start listing the big ones first.

Spyware, is software that tracks you user habits and reports them usually to a marketing firm. It runs in memory in the background, and it's only active when using the internet but thats where a lot of it comes from. Consider download and using a free Spyware removal tool, I personally like Ad-Aware.

Lack of available RAM (this is memory not to be confused with disk space). This can be caused by a number of thing including too many application open. close anything on you task bar that you aren't actively using. Also check the system tray (little section on the right) and close anything you aren't using there too. You may also be lacking is physical memory, these days operating with less than 1GB or RAM is next to impossible, I usally upgrade my physical RAM to 2GB in all my computers.

If Disk access is slow, try defragmenting the hard drive. over time the hard disk will fragment files on the disk requiring extra time to load and write files to disk. This problem may also manifest itself when surfing the internet since temporary files are written to disk.

Consider flushing your internet cache. This may seem counter intuitive since the cache is suppose to speed things up by keeping a local copy of files. By you browser has a finite amount of space for storing these and if it has to delete and add files to stay under the limit it could slow things. down.

computers decelerate over the years using fact they grow to be cluttered with junk data, too many startup products, yet in particular using fact of not easy tension degradation. to velocity up your computing gadget, you're able to desire to regulate your startup products and disable those you do not elect loading every time you turn your computing gadget on. you recognize, stuff like MSN messenger, Adobe updater, etc. you're able to do this via clicking on start up - Run - typing in msconfig, hitting enter and going to the startup tab. in basic terms be careful approximately what you disable and consider what you do not understand. you besides mght could desire to freshen up junk data, including momentary information superhighway and equipment data. you're able to do this via going to start - classes - upload-ons - Disk Cleanup. And now directly to the main substantial bit - defragmenting and optimizing document placement. Fragmentation can sluggish you down plenty using fact not easy drives are mechanical units, so the extra the examine/write heads could desire to bypass, the slower your computing gadget is. additionally outer tracks of a not easy tension are plenty quicker than the indoors tracks. it particularly is why it extremely is superb to place many times accessed data to the outer music. There are actually not easy tension optimization classes which could do it for you - the loose Auslogics Disk Defrag and UltimateDefrag (undecided if it particularly is loose or not).
