To answer this question, put it into a different perspective: when you close your eyes and see an image of a unicorn, how do you "see" the unicorn? It's your imagination and mind playing tricks with you. The "voice" inside your head is your imagination of a real sound, you're not actually hearing anything so it's not a "real" voice, just like the image of a unicorn isn't really a unicorn. It's a psychological effect, our mind wants to imagine a speaking voice in order to formulate thoughts.

The voice you hear is the voice of reason and conscience. And it is your own. Unless your mind is remembering the voices of your parents and or teachers in life, during your growing period. Sometimes memory plays tricks on you. And your own voice gets disguised and then you see a doctor, because if someone hears too many voices it is a multiple personality disorder if you identify with them and then speak aloud in a different personality and then you could call it getting into Character like the comedian Robin Williams.

Dear BoMbsaWaY:

The voice you hear in your head is your own voice. Yes. I do not know what causes us to hear our own tone when we think, but if we listen to our thinking we come to realize it is our voice as IF we were speaking verbally - only more quiet and/or distant.

I have asked a Medical doctor about it. An Internist. He could not answer me and was dumfounded I would think of something like that !! We do not pay enough attention to our thoughts and many do not have awareness of its tone.

My own thinking is that maybe thought activates vocal chords whether we speak outwardly, or not! That would be a possible physical explanation !

Now, for the spiritual explanation: As a spiritually oriented person, Christian and non-denominational (NOT occult), I have been taught that the Soul or spirit-mind within us (often blocked by the human Intellect which takes the most forward position of Mind) is the Pilot of the human Intellect (brain). In spiritual concepts ONLY - we could say that spiritually we, in the physical, have a split-mind. Acting against the knowledge of it's other self. In human terms - we accept ourselves as "normal." The split has to do with the Great Separation.

The Creator Created us in His Likeness. The only thing He knew of Himself was and is Spirit-Mind. We are OF Him, but not Him.

Some of our thoughts sound like a non-tonal voice. And, that description fits the Voice for God - the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit resides in your spirit mind (in each of us) and is your Conscience, Guide, and Comforter. You do hear Him constantly in your higher thoughts (conscience) and when being Guided (intuition). Also, notice your mind frequently gives Comforting advice to itself (you).

Again, I believe the Intellect denies soul/spirit. It is of the physical world , and due to the Great Separation, is often in denial of it's Creator, as well as the Holy Spirit and Jesus. It is far more willing to look upon the teachings of other great teachers, but uncomfortable with the idea of a Holy Spirit within, or a Teacher in charge of the Separation (Jesus) - showing us the path back Home and our Return. Eternity is our Heritage and Home Country. The Separation is quite real.

Although we may deny soul/spirit, that does not stop it from existing. We may deny God - but He isn't dependent upon our belief ! He just is. . ..

The Intellect is interested in it's individuality versus One-ness. It is basically Self-Interested - it likes complex things to digest or reason out, logic, or deduce. It therefore loves Science and thinking about it's physical world. It may cherish the exact opposite of the structure of the Creator's Kingdom which is One-ness, eternal-ness, being unlimited and unopposed and peaceful. For the physical world lacks, basically, each of those attributes.

This does not mean, however, that the two minds within us are actually separate. The soul can come forward in a spiritually oriented person and be at the Center of Mind. It can be a "Guardian Angel" due to the Presence inside it of the Holy Spirit - even when the Intellect, made for the purposes of a physical world, has forced the soul's thinking to the "back" position. Or, we can word it this way . . .we have a surface consciousness (Intellect) and an unconscious level (soul or spirit).

Most often, we hear our Intellect speaking our thoughts in our own voice.

Best regards, Lana
