Just know that the Bible wasn't shot down from heaven in a celestial lightning bolt, all nicely printed and bound in book form- it had to have some transcribers who did the interpreting and writing. These people undoubtedly put their own 'spin' on things, to to speak, going with the times or even just what they thought. I mean, think of it this way- evolution has 'proven' the creation story wrong, and yet, who's to know what 'seven days' really means, in terms of the writers of Genesis, or of God Himself- seven days might be the deity's version of millenia (which would make sense). Therefore, this is just another small detail that was mistranslated or added in- not God's wish.

Another take on it is one that I like- homosexuality is only spoken in the old testament, generally Leviticus. However, there are a lot of things condemned in Leviticus, things we all do now, happily and with no guilt. Why? Because when Jesus died, he died for all sins, and belief in him frees you from those silly sins, like eating pork and being near menstruating women.

Hope that helps you.

I'm gay and I believe in god. You're so right, nobody in a relationship has the right to tell us to abstain. Sure there's conflict, but then that's what life is about. The important thing is not to torture yourself, don't let others either... they don't have that right. God made you who you are, supressing your sexuality is only going to hurt you. Essentially, the bible condemns gay sex in a DISPROPORTIONATELY SMALL way to straight sex and a million other things that are just ignored offhand. You could start by looking at the context and source of each bit that does, most are not even relevant. The main NT condemnation comes from Paul who never met Jesus and condemned people in marriage who had sex also.... the rest, translations/context all taken to opress us as a minority. Don't let them quote Sodom and Gomoragh either, just google it ti was rape that destroyed it. Homosexuality predates the bible, happens in nature and is natural and harms no one. Just because some people think it's icky (I'm sure you think straight sex is a bit icky too, I do) Probably other people would be better to help you, but you can email me or be my contact feel free, but don't stress, you're a good person don't let anyone tell you otherwise. :o)

Perhaps by finding out what is written in the earliest available texts and not what has been translated and often altered in the translation. The actual writings of the Judaic and Christian texts have little to say about homosexuality at all and are often dealing with power.

I've linked a site that looks at the historical circumstances surrounding the Bible and what the words used actually mean.

Believing in God is more of a choice than being gay. And your belief should not be limited by what people have written, claiming to be inspired by God.

If you actually read the actual biblical texts, you will find
a) the word of god is contained in the 10 commandments and the teachings of jesus.
b) most of the old testament deals with laws of men not lows of god.
c) he bible does stipulate man (as in mankind not the male gender per se) was created in god's image. Thus one has to assume that god is multi-coloured and multi-sexual and possessed of multile characteristics. Otherwise there would be no way to explain why there are white people or gay people or any other type of characteristic.
d) nowhere in the bible are there any references to homosexuality. At least not in any of the texts that express the word of god. Though there are laws of man that puport to make all kinds of things out to be an abomination. Everything from eatign shellfish to wearing clothes of mixed fabrics and to sleepign with your brother. But if you truly believe the laws of man in the old testament make homosexuality a sin, then next time you put on your polyester/cotton shirt and go to red lobster for some seafood, you are committing two sins. But only against the laws of man and only in those ancient times.

So, go back and read the real truths and discover where jesus actually declared all those old testament laws to be of man and not of god and thus not valid. Oh, and that includes jesus saying it was no longer required to circumcise.

Trick is to believe god put you here for a reason and made you the way you are and therefore no man has the right to legislate against you for being black or gay or tall or what-have-you.

Hi Trina,

There are a great many Christians, myself included, that do not believe that the Bible is the Word of God. We think that it is just a book, written by men, and full of myth and error. The text itself bears out what we think -- if it is read thoroughly.

I think I speak for many others in saying that believing in Jesus and believing in the Bible are not related. The canon of books was not established until the Council of Carthage approved a motion of the Synod of Hippo in the late 300s. There were nearly 300 years of Christians who believed in Christ, practiced the Mass, but had no "holy book" -- I can recommend some fairly scholarly readings if you are interested, or would be glad to discuss this with you directly.

Feel free to email me at the address given in the signature.

Have a nice day.

Accept the bible in the context in which the different books were written.

Remember, if you accept gay as being wrong because of Leviticus, you also have to accept that adultery is punishable by death, that divorce and remarriage is adultery (the bible makes no allowances for ending a marriage, so according to the bible you are still married), that eating deer, catfish, cheeseburgers, and lobster will send you to hell. Also that you are fine with selling your daughter into slavery or having a child stoned to death for lack of respect to their parents. Also that he without perfect sight cannot approach the alter of the lord.

In the days when Leviticus and Paul's letters were written, some of the connotations about sex were different. Sleeping with another man "As a woman", meant being penetrated, which in Roman and middle eastern culture meant giving up dominance or power. The Romans considered being penetrated (as the above statement implies, as a bad thing. The penetrator, on the other hand, wasn't looked down on at all.

If you want to accept the bible as both literal, and for all time, then you have to reconcile some really bizarre and contradictory things.

Is everyone familar with the game telephone? If your not sit in a large circle with lots of different people someone says a sentence and passes it along and the last person says it out loud notice how much it changes from one person to the next. Imagine that happening for THOUSANDS of years, try and think about this when you read the bible. I am not trying to take away from your faith or belittle it but come on!! You cannot take the bible as gospel. It cannot by all logic be accurate, think about all the contradications that it contains and how out of date it is with todays world! What i find with bible thumpers is that they pick and choose what works for them for whatever hate they want to spew on to others wheither it be sexism, racism, war, biggotry etc and quote that its in the bible. Its not a crutch. God made everyone in is image, along with that he gave you some powerful tools one being your own free thinking will!!! Are you perfect in every biblical facet? NO!! So people I implore you stop using the bible as a hate tool !!

I believe in god in some ways, I just don't believe in the Christian version of god. I'm a good person and I believe that if you are a good person gay or straight you will go to heaven, if there is a heaven. I have studied the bible very, very much. The bible preaches too many sexist and racist things for me to believe in it. I like proof, and blind faith isn't enough for me to go on.
I'm mostly atheist, so you migt want a full fledged Christians point of veiw.

Wow---you got some really excellent answers above. I can't add much to them other than these points:

God loves all his creatures, including the gay ones.

Homosexuality is not a sin.

There are some great churches for you and I urge you to seek out a local church to provide you with the guidance and community you need. Metropolitan Community Churches are largely gay, many United Church of Christ, United Methodist and Unitarian Universalist Churches are also welcoming.
