The average life span of an unfertilized egg is approximately 24 hours.
*However* -- this does not mean you are "safe" 24 hours after ovulation. There is a lot that goes into play into determining the point in a woman's cycle where she is infertile. Relying solely on a calender or when you "think" you may have ovulated is not wise!
Sperm can live up to 5-7 days if the vaginal conditions are right, for instance if there are fertile cervical conditions (consistency of cervical mucus is like egg-whites, a slippery sensation). Considering yourself infertile 2 days prior to ovulation is a great way to wind up with a baby! So unless that is your goal, use protection at any time you have sex. Even though cycles have a typical pattern, that can vary at any time for a number of reasons. More than one person has gotten pregnant when they "shouldn't have".
IF you are charting fertility signals such as cervical mucus, cervical position, and basal body temperature, it is considered "safe" after 3 days of high temps (higher than your personal coverline temp, which changes from cycle to cycle). Some people (I fall in this category) observe fertility signs only (cervical mucus is my #1 indicator). I consider myself infertile after 3 days of dry or "sticky" mucus. But this is something that I learned about my body after years (about 3) of charting and learning about the FAM or fertility awareness method of birth control. It's not something you can just jump into and say: "Oh, I have had dry mucus for 3 days, I must be infertile now" --surprises happen! Learn about the method and your body before taking my personal experiences as the end-all be-all truth.
I highly recommend the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. Learn about your body and its fertility signals! Visit its sister site, ovusoft.com, for information and help. It is a free site with lots of topics discussed in its forums.

Safe for conception.
After ovulation the egg is in the fallopian tube in it's descent towards the uterus.
This period of time is as fertile as any and more fertile than many.

Use a condom. It's never safe otherwise.
