I think the tower of Babel is a bunch of baloney. We speak the same language in the US but look how it differs from region to region. Television probably keeps us from getting to far afield in our language but imagine thousands of years of living without outside communication. We change our language all the time now, if we lived in a closed society our language would evolve to a point that it would be completely different. Mass communication may move us toward a language of the world that we can all understand but not for a long time.

When populations become isolated from one another eventually their languages will develop differently to the point where they become mutually unintelligible. For example, in Roman times, the people of Italy (Italia) and Spain (Iberia) both spoke Latin but during the dark ages the populations drifted apart and they both developed separate languages which both retain similarities to latin and to one another but are two separate languages. Languages often develop when they come into contact with indigenous language and the languages of the colonizers and colonized are blended together. These are called pidgin language and are usually simplistic but can evolve into even more sophisticated Creole (like in Haiti where they speak French Creole) and can become their own language

According to Bible,Tower of Babel.Probably in reality, different tribes of peoples in the beginning were so displaced from each other that they came up with their own ways of communication. As countries grew and conquered others language was incorporated into the conquered people. That is why alot of different languages have familiar words

Genesis 11 : 1-9...And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime for mortar. And they said, Go to , let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven...vs. 7 (the Lord speaking) Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. ...vs. 9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel ( pronounced babble ) because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth... In simple words, The people thought they didn't need God and could get to heaven on their own, but God confused their languages to show His control and power.
