I just did that with a question and just thought of this.

Christmas and New Year's are put "together" because they are a week apart. They are considered "holidays." There are other holidays that follow Christmas (Boxing Day, for example). There are also special feast days "St. Stephen's Day" and "The Holy Innocents." New Year's Day just finishes up the holiday week.

Why are you asking this question?

a friend of mine told me " Christmas is for the kids to get their gifts and New Years is for the parents to wind down and have a " party " as a reward for surviving the insanity created by the greedy merchants at Christmas time. "

Because they are both a part of the holiday season.
