OSU won't play Boise State in the title game for the same reason BCS teams won't play Boise State during the regular season: They're afraid Boise State might win.

BCS teams will only play two types of teams in the regular season:
1) Weak teams they can beat easily.
2) Strong teams that they can afford to lose to.

Weak teams? Yeah, right: OSU barely beat Illinois (2-10) by 17-10; Michigan didn't exactly dominate Penn State (8-4) 17-10, Iowa (6-6) 20-6, or Northwestern (4-8) 17-3; and USC, supposedly #2, LOST to Oregon State (8-4) 33-31, a team which also LOST to Boise State, 42-12. USC also put in three consecutive mediocre efforts again Arizona and the two Washington teams. The feeble argument of BCS schools is that they are "superior" to Boise State and "don't need to play them". That smells like they're in fear rather than inferiority.

Strong teams? By losing to OSU 42-39, Michigan dropped in the rankings, but not by much; if Michigan beat Boise State 42-39, they would suffer worse in the rankings than by losing to OSU. It's sort of like the ranking system in chess, your result AND quality of opponent determine your ranking.

Sure, Boise State has only a slim chance of beating OSU (10%, I'd say) but that's enough to scare away any BCS team: If Boise State won (or even if they lost to OSU by 24-21), then Boise State would gain two things.

1) Credibility, proof that they are a major program. By gaining credibility, BCS teams couldn't run away from them anymore. The BCS schools have ALL avoided the so-called "mid-major" programs - Boise State, Louisville, West Virginia, Hawaii, Houston and BYU - for the same reason: the risk of losing. Fresno State was the only "mid-major" to play a BCS team this year, and that's because Fresno State HAS credibility: it was Fresno State that destroyed USC's national title hopes in 1992. Since then, the "top" teams have been petrified of anyone who could surprise them.

2) Money. Playing in the Fiesta Bowl, Boise State will get US$3million; all the other BCS teams are getting at least twice that much. (The little children don't want to share their toys....) A playoff system and/or any system that permits teams from outside the six prissy-ACCed conferences scares them. They want the money for themselves; if Boise State actually beat Texas, Oklahoma, or whomever they play, watch for the BCS to change and make it tougher for "mid-major" schools to get in.

I forgot to mention it: To all those who whine "Boise State has a weak schedule", kindly explain why, when Boise State ASKS to play BCS teams, the BCS teams refuse.

Boise State WANTS a strong schedule, but the teams they need to play to have a strong schedule run away from them. HOW, exactly, is the cowardice of BCS teams the fault of Boise State? Don't say their schedule is weak when nobody strong wants to play them.

Boise St is in Idaho. They play in one of the conferences that is outside of what might be called the "big six" or major conferences - The Pac 10, Big 10, Big 12, SEC, ACC and Big East. It is extremely difficult for anyone outside of those conferences to get into a BCS bowl game (Rose, Orange, Sugar etc) much less get a shot at the National championship. Too bad there is no way Boise can go on to play the winner of the Ohio St - Florida game, I think there would be at least some interest across the country in seeing it.

You must be joking!!! Ohio State would win by 25+ over Boise State, no contest. A bad matchup, not matketable, remember bowl games are all about money. What advertiser would want to invest in a Ohio State/Boise State matchup? The answer is none.

playing in a non-BCS conference makes it very difficult to score meaningful points in the polls. Boise has beaten some BCS teams this year, but it's not enough..

since Boise is such a good team, i'd like to see them leave the WAC and join the PAC-10. this would give them more suitable opposition, plus give them a chance to prove that they really do belong at the top!

consolation prize though, Boise will play in a major bowl, probably Fiesta Bowl. and if they can win this game, they will have proven they are for real!

They wouldn't beat them but if they played USC they would kill them becuse they lost33-32 to oragan state university and Bsu kill them like 42-13 or something like that if they played Ohio state i amagin the score being 32-28 or somewhere around there

Because the NCAA doesn't have the brains, foresight and nuggets to implement a playoff system that would give BSU a legitimate shot at playing OSU for a real national championship.

That, and BSU dominates a weak conference and just doesn't have the strength of schedule.

And somehow you think Boise State, who hasn't played anyone in the top 25 all year, is somehow a better matchup than USC will be.

Wow, must be nice to be so delusional...

boise st is a good team for sure, but they have a much easier schedule then the teams in front of them. And that factors into bcs rankings

Their strength of schedule is far too weak. Unless they play stronger competiton and perform as well as they're doing now, they'll have no shot. They will play in a BCS bowl though because they're guaranteed a spot as long as they finish 12th or higher.

it's because the bcs is a bunch of crap that needs to be eliminated and replaced with a playoff tournament instead
