If it was 1861 and knowing what you do now....would you have voted for succession all over again. I think 145 years is long enough to submit this question to the people of the north and south. Would you succede from the Union after what you know now?

As I'm seeing from anwsers....not many has persuaded me into thinking that they have the least bit of knowledge when it comes to the Civil War.....remember Lincoln said that he would end the war by keeping slavery if he couild....so....as one responded that I was for the institution of slavery.....the war was'nt about slavery dumb butts....it was about states rights.....go back to the History Channel if you want accurate history.....not the schools that teach a false history.....

Do you people think that our founding fathers would have ever signed anything to bound them like England had? I don't THINK so....they figured they had the right to seced from the Union if they were'nt happey......80% of the GNP the the south was cotton.....and getting good prices from England....so think about it again...people the war was about Cotton....South hadf a larger GNP than thew Union.....put your history together people.

The Amancipation Proclomation was not for the North......slaves were only freed in the southern states....not the North....check the facts. Lincoln used this for procagada to set the war in a different motion. Fact is...slaves in the North were not all free.

No, it was not viable then nor is it now. The overarching point of the Civil War was whether a state could decide not to do something, and if it didn't like what the rest of the Union was doing, whether it could just stop being in the Union. The answer was no. That was not the point of our constitutional democracy (as opposed to the system under the Articles of Confederation, where the states were basically autonomous units.)
On a personal note, would I myself be happier if, perhaps, Alabama, South Carolina, and Louisiana seceeded from the Union? Perhaps. Would the North have been economically better off if we had let the South go? Perhaps (save Texas and its oil, Florida and its tourism, and a few other resources). But we're all in this together. The North would not have tackled the racial issues that sparked the civil war until much, much later. The South probably would have imploded due to their lack of non-slave economy and innovation. Certainly today a number of states could function as (much) less powerful independent states -- if Georgia (the former soviet republic) can do it, then Georgia (the state) can do it. But once again, that's not the point. America is great because of its bountiful natural resources and its diversity. Once we fall into the trap of the Yugoslavias, the Iraqs, the "-stan" countries and fractionalize ourselves based on religion, poltiical belief, geography, etc., we become much much weaker. The whole truly is greater than the sum of the parts in America, and we must keep it that way.

Contrary to popular belief, not every Republican is the same. I vote Republican because I share many of the same fundamental beliefs as the Republican Party. If, however, a Democrat emerged who shared more of my beliefs and views than any Republican running, I would vote for that Democrat. It hasn't happened yet. It's not always the party...Sometimes it's the individual. I usually agree with the Libertarians the MOST. But, when will they have a chance to get elected? @Cricrinapoli: I'm not rich, nor am I a "fundamentalist Christian", yet McCain represents my views FAR better than Hillary or Obama. There goes your theory.

No the south is under occupation from further south. They need the north more now so and hopefully get together to enforce stricter laws to take back American from it's illegal southern neighbors.
