do you mean in winter time? there are engine block heaters that keep youre oil at a warmer temperature so it flows more freely on start up and reduces engine wear. start up is the most damaging thing to youre engine because the oil has drained to the bottom of the engine and the pistons and piston walls are metal to metal contact until the oil starts flowing. or you might be talking about plugging it into a diagnostic computer that most garages do. that lets the mechanic go into the cars computer and diagnose any problems that you may be having.

You are most likely talking about a Block heater. You see these often in the northern Midwest, Alaska, Canada areas. they have put a heater in the radiator and motor block to help keep the oils and fluids from freezing up. this allows the car to start better and have less warm up time. Other wise when you get in to sub 0 temps you would have to leave the car running or not drive until spring.

Assuming that you are plugging your car into 110v household current, it is likely that you are providing power to an internal heater that keeps the coolant in your engine block and radiator warm. This will prevent the need to "warm up" your car on cold winter days, providing that it is working properly.

in very cold areas where your engine will freeze up when parked your car will have a heater in the motor area. an external electrical cord can then be plugged into an outlet provided by the business to keep this from happening

It can keep your oil warm in severe temperatures.

We don't have an electric car but my husband plugs in his vehicle in severe cold temps in winter.

if it runs on diesel, i think some cars/trucks have to be plugged in to electric to keep the battery from going dead during winter/cold.....it keeps the engine warm....i had a diesel car once and it had a place to put it in to electric cord, but i never had to use it

If you live in a cold climate - you plug in your block heater to keep the fluids from freezing or gelling.
