I am a nutritionist

Prenatals are NOT good to take till after you become pregnant! Prenatal vitamins are LOWER in vitamins and minerals than a regular multi-vitamin (except iron, which is so high it can make you sick and cause premature birth if you are not anemic).

I recommend a multivitamin and a calcium supplement daily in addition to a healthy diet. start the prenatal after you have a confirmed test

also in response to some of the answers above, I would like you to know,
*folic acid is present in suficient amounts to support a healthy pregnancy in a regular multivitamin
*prenatal vitamins have absolutely no effect on your fertility
*prenatal vitamins will do nothing for hair and nail growth or health (both are controlled by hormones not diet)

Definitely YES! Prenatal vitamins give a woman the essential vitamins and nutrients that she needs during pregnancy, but if taken not when pregnant, it can help support her natural bodies needs keeping her healthy throughout life. Of course as one gets older then the body requires more of certain vitamins and minerals (to prevent bones loss and such), so you should look into a supplement for older women, but for the most part, prenatal vitamins would be a great source for everything one needs.

If you are trying to conceive then they are definately a good idea. I used to work with a man that had a pharmaceutical degree, and he took prenatal vitamins because they are just packed full of all of the good stuff.

Prenatal vitamins are very important because they contain the appropriate amount of folic acid, which protects the fetus from spina bifida. you should take them while trying to conceive because you don't know that you're pregnant until at least a couple of weeks and by then, the damage from folic acid deficiency is done.

Kimber is right on the mark....the only side effect that you may find unpleasant is constipation, but otherwise, it is a good idea, particularly about the folic acid, as the birth defects associated with folate deficiency happen before most people are aware they are pregnant.

Not prenaal vitamins, perhaps not useful for getting pregnat. What DOES help is Folic Acid. One a day. Good luck.
