because they don't want to know how are you doing bottom line.

Because we live in a society of instant gratification. We ask how people are doing simply because it's habit. We don't care how you're doing really. All we want is a one syllable answer. Nothing we have to follow up with additional questions. We don't even want to hear "Oh, I'm doing alright" because that means you're not perfectly fine and we should probably say "Oh, why, what's wrong?" None of us can simply find the time, I guess.

It's a slight extension of a polite "hello" in that to answer "how ya doing?" you really should just say "good" or "great" quickly. I avoid saying "how ya doing" to people I KNOW will spend the next 30 minutes going on and on about their problems (it really is just a greeting.)

If they wanted to sit and talked they woulda sayed so, so most of the time they just ask "how ya doin'" and keep walkin'. You gotta be fast and say, "good, how about you?" and if ya do it fast enough they'd respond back to ya.

Probably just being polite. If you make eye contact with a passing stranger, it can be a little awkward. So sometimes, they either smile, nod or say "hey" or "hi" or "how it going" I dont think they actually expect to stop and carry on a conversation.

This is a rhetorical question, its asked in order to make a statement rather than to get an answer. we people became so hypocrite now a days that we just pretend to care.

People do it because they care about how they look to others not really because they are interested in the answer to the question. Lame but true.

Because when you ask, it's just being nice... You really don't want to hear that they are having the worst year ever... My throat hurts... I don't make enough money... I'm lonely... My girlfriend left me for another guy... etc...

Absolutely not. It happens to me quite frequently. Very rude and seems routine to most people.
