Ok, this is my take on it..
I believe it is a toned down version of his (Andrew McMahon) dealing with the cancer he has. He tells how he saw and dealt with it.. People working towards being the best they can be, but at the end (if you watched the video for the song) it is dealt with by a swift hand, no won comes out a winner, eventually you all perish, either by your own doings or the the cruelity of the sickness you have.
