My son has to do a Social Studies project dealing with the topic Homesteaders. I'm searching the internet to find information but some how it doesn't seem like the information is the same as the meaning of the word homesteaders.

Homestead Act (1862) -- The Homestead Act declared that any citizen or intended citizen could claim 160 acres - one quarter square mile - of government land. Claimants must "improve" the plot with a dwelling and grow crops. After five years, it became the claimant's property, free and clear.

Homesteaders included families of former factory workers, families of Civil War veterans, former slaves, and immigrants.

The source I've listed has more very good information on the subject.
