Do you think that all the literary scandals associated with Ulysses affected its success in the literary world and establishing it as one of the best books ever written?

If yes then in what way?

Thanks.

I think the scandals gave it publicity for monetary success, but its literary merits gave it the lasting power as one of the best and boldest books written.

The brouhaha over its content alerted many of the curious as to the book's existence. Those who claimed it as Art, however, prompted more curiosity about it which led to more people discovering just what a magnificent text it truly is.

Yes, because I think it created a sense of sensationalism around the work and in some ways made it seem more revolutionary than it was. Were it not for the bravery of Ms. Sylvia Beach the world would not have it today.
