Was a good program that answered part of your question on BBC 2 last week...not sure when it will be repeating but it's worth looking for...it was on our U.S. Discovery channel yesterday. The driving force seemed to be food as other post have stated.

because of the food! it is called hunter and gather and when the food supply would get short or would run out in one place they would move n order to find more food and to survive! because the people were no settled down but rather nomadic which made them go from place to place in search of food!
