I am renting a house and recently I have noticed there are bats living inside the walls of the laundry room which is off the carport, weve seen them a few times but I can hear them every time I go out there and the worse problem is the awful disgusting smell of urine that is taking over the entire laundry room, and now I have started smelling that same smell in our bathroom which is closest to the laundry room, my husband is going to talk to the landlords this weekend about it, but my question is has anyone else ever had this kind of a problem? do exterminators take care of bats, and also will they do something to get rid of the smell as well? thanks alot.

you will have to be very carefull who you tell if you intend to exterminate the bats - as they are protected species. when I was working in England we had to pay out £25000 to shore up an old building which had evidence of bats and we were not alowed to knock it down.

Lord what a pain bats are!!!
I had well over 100 bats living in my attic and the ONLY way to get rid of them was to wait until they start to leave at night and look for where they exit from. Slowly start to cover the exits until you are left with one. This may take a few nights to do, but when you are sure none remain, especially babies, go ahead and cover the last exit. Remember that bats need to fall before they fly, so look around the roof line and around windows. You may hear them trying to return in the morning as they will bounce off windows ect. Another thing to think about..since you have taken away their home they will search out new dwellings. I had to look under the handle of the car...around our bbq everywhere!! It may take a few weeks for them to move on afterwards but well worth it. As for the smell of urine not sure what to tell you but I do know that bat feces emitts radon gases and is best to call professionals for cleanup.

There are ways to encourage bats to move elsewhere and a reputable bat specialist will know them. No need to exterminate as they are a wonderful animal, just not living in your wall.

Whoever is chosen, they won't get rid of the smell. That's up to you or someone else. Hopefully, after they're gone, the smell will dissipate after time too.
