Totally hate it. They sue our government to supposedly protect civil liberties of individuals, but they are very selective of which liberties they wish to protect. They also have been granted the benefit of collecting money from the government to pay for their suits against the government. So, the more they sue, the more of our tax dollars they get to pocket. They also seem to be all in favor of any and every immoral and debauched whim an individual feels is their right to practice, and they defend these perversions with a passion.

I'm a member. I frequently disagree with their tactics, but I'm glad they exist. Usually.
They are making it harder for "Homeland Security" to do their job, but at the same time, they are trying to keep that agency from doing things that don't have anything to do with homeland security, things that no one wants that agency to do, like spying on citizens.
On another issue, I really have to go out on a personal limb, so I hope you'll see what I'm saying. The ACLU defends the right of the Neo-Nazis and the KKK to march and rally. These are both very dangerous organizations. But, you know what would make them even more dangerous? Secrecy. By making part of their activities public, open and legal, hate groups are made less dangerous. Even if all it does is to let the rest of us see the member's faces.
It is hard for me to agree that the Klan should have the right to hold a rally because I vehemently oppose everything the Klan stands for. However, from a realistic "gotta deal with it somehow" point-of-view, a legal, out-in-the-open Klan is much better than a hidden, completely illegal Klan.
Above all, the ACLU protects the right of EVERY American to protest government policies. That is a valuable service. So when they make a move that I find difficult to agree with, I think for a while and I see the reason.

I approve of it. It is there to defend the 1st amendment. I don't approve of every single thing they do, but the vast majority of it I do.
