that is 2 diffrent questions
Defragment is reorganizng your hard drive so it can preform its best. When you remove something from your computer your Hard drive writes it off as free space. When you download anything new it writs to the space. When it gets full it jsut moves on to the next empty space avalible. Defragment just means it puts them toghether again so it can run effectively.
Erasing a hard drive. There is no real way to erase a hard drive. If your format you are just telling the hard drive to rewrite on top of everything. People can still retrieve information off of it. There is no risk in erasing a hard drive but if you do it wrong it might take you a while to set it up again.

Defragging doesn't erase anything, it just takes file fragments and puts them back together, hence the name defrag...
Erasing the hard drive erases everything...
If all you want to do is clean your tracks after browsing **** on your Mom's computer all you have to do is...
1. Go to Tools>Internet Options> and in the general section clear history, delete cookies, delete files (including offline content)
2. download and run clean cache from www.buttuglysoftware

Defragmentation is the process of moving existing files that are split into several physical pieces on your hard drive into one concurrent space, so the hard drive can access them more easily and faster.
No deleted files will be revealed during defragmentation and erasing files viewed during defragmentation would be about the same as formatting your hard drive.
Erasing a hard drive will erase everything on it (Windows, all your data, etc)

do you mean sites or files? if you want to erase all of the sites you have visited, down load CCleaner (crap cleaner) it's a free program and erases your temp internet files, history files, cookies, etc.
defrag doesn't eliminate anything. it just rearranges the stuff on your drive so it can be accessed more efficiently. do it too.

Defragging won't remove any files, just move them.
And why would you want to delete all files visited during defrag, that would wipe your disc as EVERY FILE is checked

defrag is not erasing ( mostly ) just reordering ( has nothing to do with search history )
CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION !!! the instructions below will not erase your browsing history - for someone with just a little knowledge retrieving the files is easy ( as an example your security program also makes a log of every web page that it scans ! )
