he says he doesnt want one because 1) there is no need for a fuss (it's his 40th so I disagree) & 2) he would be worried that harldy anyone would turn up & that would be worse than not having a party in the first place.
We dont know that many people so its a fair point & his b-day is only a week after xmas so many people will have made plans already?
Help!

The reason I was thinking about having a party for him anyway is because I think that when he said he didn't want one, it was because he was feeling sorry for himself & had an attitude of "never mind my birthday" - like when women say they don't want flowers or anything for valentines day (as it's a waste of money etc) & then complain how their partner didn't make an effort lol

Host a dinner at a restaurant and invite a few friends making sure that you know who will be coming so that you can get your reservation right.

Even if one other couple comes it will be a festive and fun celebration.

You do not need to suprise him.

If he says he doesn't want one then why would you do it anyway. part of the problem with couples nowadays are they ignore the (reasonable) requests of their spouse/partners. Nothing will screw up a relationship more than what you're contemplating.

Plan on something nice and enjoyable between the two of you. If you want to intigrate intimacy into it...fine. You'd know what he'd enjoy better than I. However...if you want to be the ignorant, uncaring, selfish and "I don't care what you want" type...go ahead. its your life. Advice is free. I could care less whether you take it or not. After all...I don't have to eat and sleep with you.

I think if you really want to do something for his birthday, just have a small party with close family. If he doesn't want a party, don't go against his wishes and have a surprise party. Some people just aren't happy about turning 40.

Please don't. I know you mean well, but he doesn't want one and he means it. I had this happen one time and I was horrified. Some people just don't like it--and they don't have to explain themselves. The other suggestions for a quiet dinner or a dinner with just family would be fine.
