a new kitten piddled on my down comforter, (in a duvet of course). The duvet is machine washable, the comforter is not. There is a small stain, but I am more concerned with the urine smell. I don't want a repeat experience! Do the home dry cleaning products work? (I have access to a front load dryer), or do I need to break down and have it professionally cleaned?

This is what I use with my dogs and with my piano teacher's cats--it's called "Simple Solution" and it comes in a spray, a bottle and even a gallon (yeah, I've used that much!)...it's a liquid that you dab on the spot and when it dries, the urine smell/etc. is gone.

First separate the affected area from the dry area with a rubber band or two, so you won't get "wicking" back into the clean part of the comforter. Then, if the spot is still wet, blot as much of the urine out as possible with paper towels. ( If the spot has already dried, use a black light to locate it - it will show up a different color) Next, completely saturate the area with one of the enzyme products sold at pet stores to treat cat urine. Work the solution through to the feathers - kind of the way you'd work soap through a sweater when hand washing. Then let it dry naturally - and slowly - for a few days. If it still smells, apply more of the enzyme product. This has worked for me many times - with both comforters and carpeting. But, keep in mind the enzyme solutions are expensive, and sometimes it's just not worth the time, effort, and expense to save something. If there's any smell left at all, your cat will very likely re-visit the same area.

Professional cleaners have products with enzymes that totally get rid of the urine and any after smell. Pet stains have a habit of leaving and then returning with the weather. It depends on how much you value the comforter as to wheither you get a professional or take a chance on ruining it with one of the many home solutions. If you want a home solution call your vet and see if he has something that he recommends. I wouldn't trust anything in the pet section of the grocery store to work but some of your other answers might have a good name for you that they have tried. Good luck.

Horrible experience, I really sympathise! It has happened to me and I found that slapping water through the comforter/stain helped, plus TONS of Febreze. I once tried washing a down comforter and it transmorgified into a nasty hard lump so I wouldn't recomend that.
