Shakespeare lived in 16th century England. His plays were written approximately between 1590 (with Henry VI) until 1605 (with A Yorkshire Tragedy).
Yet the settings of Shakespeare's plays spanned more than merely the time contemporary with his life. Many Shakespeare plays had settings in the pre-Christian Greek and Roman civilizations.

William Shakespeare was born in April of 1564 (sometime shortly before his baptism on April 26, 1564) and died April 23, 1616. This period of time is known as the Elizabethean period, after Queen Elizabeth. Many of his plays were written at her behest (including Twelfth Night, given on the Twelfth Night of Christmas).
