Oprah is a billionare. She needs to give more of her money to the poor. In my opinion she is a cheap skate. Bill Gates gives more than 50% of his income to charity. How much does Oprah give?

I would give it to Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit. They offer hot meals, distribute food, have a shower and clothing program for the homeless, as well as other services for substance abuse treatment, children services (library service and art therapy studio), and more. The Capuchin's help the homeless and the working poor, something Detroit has too much of.
As a citizen, $1,000 may not go far to change the life of a stranger. However, the Capuchin's have connections, and know how to make the most of every penny.

depends on the situation, there's not too much you can do to help the homeless with a grand besides buy them some food, clothes and put them up in a hotel for a few days. I guess it depends on the situation. If you think about it $1,000 would help out pretty much anyone who isn't super rich.

Who needs $1000?? Why not help a perfect stranger for no other reason than assisting someone in need??
Its a shame so many people need a buck now to feel the need to do anything for anyone.

I would assist a family/families that lost everything in Katrina - not just with the big stuff they may need but helping to restore old photos or letters or personal momentos.

If they were homeless, I would help them find a place and work.
If they were sick, I would pay for their Dr's appt. and medicine
If they were hungry, I would feed them and buy them groceries.
If they were sad, I would show them the joy in the world
