It's a combination of shrinking the blood vessels in your finger and making the finger as slick as possible.
So, immerse the finger in as cold of water as you can stand. The cold will cause the blood vessels to contract. You can also try elevating your finger/hand above the level of your heart so that less blood makes it into the vessels in the finger.
Then, quickly grease the finger with some cooking oil, butter, lotion, etc. and try to maneuver the ring off.
If the ring cannot be taken off and is causing you any discomfort, have it cut off.
Good luck.

Ice your finger and keep your hand over your head for at least 10 minutes (to get the blood out of the area and decrease swelling). Then try Vasoline. Turn the ring sideways so the top is facing the inside of your fingers while you're trying to pull it off. Good luck!

Hey I'm shocked! No one said to cut the finger off.. impressive.
Actually windex (window cleaner) works great.. as long as there are no opal or pearl stones in it.

lube up your finger real good!,tightly wrap your finger with dental floss, slip end closest to your palm under ring, now unwind dental floss and the ring should come off, and if that doesn't work tree pruners surely will...LOL
