I found an alternate brand of memory on amazon, but I don't know if it will work. I have a dell dimension de 051 with Intel celeronchip and and only 256 mb ram. I found a Kinston 512 mb module for dimension for about $100. will it work?

Most memory retailers have a "configurator" that will tell you exactly what your specific computer needs. Here's a few sites you can check out:

http://www.kingston.com/
http://www.crucial.com/
http://www.kahlon.com/
http://www.pny.com/

Once you know what you can use and in what combination, you can check for best prices.

Also if your unit is under any Dell warranty with them be advise, if you break the seal on the back, it is a strip, and if you remove the back or take it to a repair shop, the warranties are voided, plus if you use product that are not Dell approved the unit could become corrupted and then you are really sunk.

As the one person suggested, contact Dell and inquire as to there ideas and the memory the recommend.

I worked as a Level 3 Tech support in Canada for Dell and the corporate division, we handles most of all the North American service calls. Make sure before you make any decisions that could be more expensive than you want, a new computer is alot more expensive than the proper memory modules.

It very well might work. If you don't know how or what your doing, take it to or have someone that does know take a look at it. I had a Factory Dell PC, took out the 256mb ramstick and put in 2 512s. Its also very wise to call Dell and ask them what is the maximum amount of memory for this PC and Motherboard. Or look at there website and see what is the max they would and could sell you. I didn't say buy from Dell. you could, but is always nice to know what limits are so you do not exceed them and waste money.
It is also wise because then you are also putting the right RAM in, DDR,DDRM,DDRS, theres tons of hardware.
