I have a laptop and desktop at home. The desktop is an old machine without a LAN card. But it has a Wireless USB adapter. The Laptop has a Wireless Card. I can connect each to the Internet wirelessly.
Is there any way I can connect the two PCs wirelessly? I would like to transfer files between the PCs

Assumption is you have Wireless Access Point and router. If you don't, you need.

Options for transferring files:-

1. To transfer files between PCs, you need to make it part of same work group.
2. Start FTP server on one of the machine and use FTP.

If you don't have wireless AP and/router, use Adhoc mode on laptop and use one of the option stated above.

There are 2 varieties of WiFi networking: "infrastructure and advert-hoc." it particularly is achieveable so which you are able to create an advert-hoc community that connects the two computers without an get entry to element. in case your modem can connect directly to the regularly occurring device (which has been enabled for information superhighway sharing), that would do the trick. Else, you will could set up an "infrastructure" on the spot community. Assuming that your "on the spot modem" is an get entry to element, you will could get a on the spot adapter (PCI for a pc, playing cards for notebooks) for each device. homestead windows machines have a wizard to establish a house community as quickly as you have those in place. If the on the spot modem does no longer have a geared up-in firewall, get one. enable as most of the risk-free practices valuable properties because of the fact the on the spot modem will furnish on it, too (WEP or comparable). **different concept: Belkin makes some large "Powerline Ethernet Adapters." because of the fact the laptop is in all hazard already plugged into a similar outlet each and all the time, you're able to set up a small hub close to the internet-related laptop and run the wiring by your shops. it particularly is often low-priced than on the spot**
