Yes, homosexuals do tend to get depressed more often. That's because of the heightened tension of being who they are.

I am almost never depressed, neither is my partner of nearly 15 years duration. On the other hand, a fair number of gay males are gentle souls that have been hurt by people, usually deliberately -- even if they were not known to genuinely be gay. For those people, depression can be a natural outgrowth of the way they've been treated -- not of their sexuality.
Kind thoughts,
Reyn

Oppression increases depression in some gays, living in a small minded society that is always creating additional obstacles for gays and religious groups defaming and vilifying them constantly and working to remove their civil rights can make life a bit of a struggle for gays but it also makes them very durable and strong, it's true that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
Tell your friend that once you come out and once you have realised there is no pleasing bigots and homophobes you can ignore them almost totally and life gets better and better, there are loads of really nice accepting straight people out there and those that aren't accepting quickly disappear from your life once you assert yourself, be strong.

Often times young people who are gay do have depression because they are different, and because other people (who don't like gays) tend to make life hard for them. The rate of suicide among gay teens is much higher than for a hetero teen. Just think about it.. if people are always telling you you are wrong, immoral, shouldn't have been born, wish you get AIDS, etc... just imagine. You wouldn't feel very welcome or happy to be alive.

I think your friend is just depressed as many heterosexual's are also. I have never experienced depression and I have been married to my wife for 14 years.....The only gay people that experience unhappiness are those still in the closet...for me....I've never been more out or more happier.

when you are gay you tend to find it harder to find a partner because alot of people don't accept the fact that people might just like the same sex. I mean I am bisexual and i find it that people ignore the fact that we are human with beliefs too.I enjoy the company of woman everyonce and a while ans well as the company of a man but to me people who shun on the gay community are just full of themselves
