i don't know if there is an automated method for it...

Right click the layer you want to save as a jpeg

Choose duplicate layer.

Under the destination section set the document to "new"
type in a name and click ok.

This will move the layer keeping the dimensions and formatting.

You can save this new image as a jpeg

If you want to get rid of all the formatting then you can use CTRL+A to select your whole image.
Select a layer
Go to Edit: copy
then File: new (just click ok when the dialog comes up)
Then Edit: Paste

As in line with Brittany's anser, psd keeps layers, there are another codecs that do a similar yet even as you're modifying a document psd is stunning. once you're finished keep a duplicate of the document in jpg format so that you could use it contained in the format you pick yet preserve your layered archives document in case you pick to edit it further later on.

lets try this: when 'standing' in one of the layers you want to separate, click in the layers palette the 'eye' so you wont see the other layers. Then save as-jpg file, and voilá..

I've done it before. Same thing for the other layers as well
