And, what about political organizations and unions at the workplace...are they practical and serve a legitimate purpose?

Do you feel as though you have made a difference by being a member?

I think belonging to community groups actually serves the purpose of reuniting people just as the climate for social cohesiveness since the Industrial Revolution is at the height of fragmentation.

But yes, they do serve both functions. As far as political organizations I personally feel that we'd be better served with an Israeli type cabinet where people get together on key issues but otherwise think for themselves; but nonetheless I think political involvement is a good thing.

As for Unions, I was a union rep and did it to prevent management from gaining the upper hand and punishing people at whim. As a union rep and also as a member of a fraternal organization I did feel I made a difference.

I think, however, that in a perfect world none of this would be necessary because people would be following the Golden Rule and doing good things as individuals instead of under the banner of official organizations to achieve that.

Both. Each particular group has a purpose or goal to pursue, usually for the good of its members or an outside charity. Its members also get the benefits of socializing, which is an inborn need of human beings.
