Horizontal velocity is the speed of something flat ot the ground like a car on the road.

Vertical velocity is the up/down speed, like a ball thrown straight up.

If you throw something on an angle (not straight up) it has some vertical velocity in the up direction and some horizontal velocity along the ground.

every body has two linear motions,namely horizontal velocity and vertical velocity.but a body in st.line has only one component or only either vertical or horizontal velocity.
so vertical velocity means the from top to bottom or on y-axis and horizontal velocity is from left to right or on x-axis
