Mainly it is to keep down distractions. It is much easier to get ready in the morning when you are not thinking about what clothes will impress who. Then at school, you aren't distracted by the latest styles people are wearing, or how wierd someone is for wearing all black, etc. It makes things more even. Also, it can be used as a safegaurd in areas where gangs and colors play into account.

Schools have dress code because they want they school to look as one. Some kids are being picked on at school by other students who family have money and can afford those name brand clothing and there are kids parents who cannot afford those name brand clothing. Some schools want the kids to learn that its not about how much money your parents make or don't make you are in school to get an education.

it eliminates the distraction of fashion in school so that kids might actually learn something. School is about education not what the other kids are wearing.
