Different hair types evolved basically to protect the brain in different climate extremes.
White people evolved in cool climates, and so...for the most part...have limp hair that lays down on the head. (i.e.: providing warmth, like a blanket)
Black people evolved in tropical climates, and their tight, curly hair both provides shade (keeping direct sunlight from beating down on the top of the head) but at the same time allowing wind to blow through, which provides a cooling effect.

This is NOT a racist question! all this people who said it was, go to the dictionary and look up what racism is. This is just a question that one might ponder on. jeez man....
Anyway, I think it has to do with the pigmentation in their skin and a slight part on the climate they are brought up in. Ofcourse the hereditary genes will encounter as well.

First of all I don't see this as a racist question, I would suppose its because of the climate conditions where black people have lived at first, it is a very interesting question.

In Africa, the sun is so hot & direct, that our more coarse texture of hair helps to protect our scalp from the suns damage. White people are indigenous to places that dont have as much sun exposure, so they have a more fine texture of hair.

this question is not racist!!! black people REALLY DO have different hair than white people. he's just asking WHY. no where did he say that one is better than the other, hes simply recognizing a fact and asking why. a question such as "why are balck people's skin darker than whites?" isn't racist, so why should this question be.

Well I know that our hair color is different because we have more pigment in our skin, and somehow we have more sebacious glands which makes our hair more oily. Hmm still thinking on that one.
