I am looking to buy a new computer. I would mostly only use it for 2 things, the internet and to play video games. A co-worker told me that a desktop is much better and cheaper for my situation, but the only thing is that I might be leaving the country in about a year. So it would be much easier to travel with a laptop than with a desktop.

A needless question, really. Gaming laptops moreorless don't exist and are a lame marketing term. Laptops at the highest of the high end still lack the graphics processing ability of a mid-high tier gaming desktop computer. If you're serious about gaming, it's a no-brainer, do not get a laptop. Desktops are cheaper than laptops whether you build yourself or buy prebuilt (I would recommend building yourself every time as you will save a lot of money and it is very easy to do) and depending on which components you choose you will get much more power than any laptop. Desktops are also fully upgradeable whereas only hard drives and RAM can be upgraded in laptops.

It depends on how high end you want to go with video games.

Video games tend to push technology and would quickly outgrow a manufactured system.

A home built desktop would allow you to keep up with higher end technology for video games.

A home built system can be built with comparitve prices to manufactured systems. However, home built systems can be built with better hardware and you'll be able to upgrade just that one piece of hardware without breaking any warranty.

Once you look into upgrading a system a home built system will save you a lot of money really fast.

Gaming is best done on a desktop.

Internet browsing doesn't matter what system you use.

Well, unless you are going to travel within the country you are moving to on a weekly basis, then it would be better to get a desktop. They are a lot less expensive. And you would only have to transport it once.

Laptops aren't meant to have Windows on them and as most games are built for Windows then I would suggest a desktop.

I hate laptops with a passion now, as they suffer from slow start ups and just generally bad performance.

If you're going to get a laptop get one that's very expensive! Desktops are MUCH more reliable, quicker and cheaper!

If you do, a duo core processor with at least 2GHz processor will do the trick. Most of the desktops are coming out now with upwards of 4Ghz. So, I can see why your friend would steer you in the direction of a desktop.

Well, only get a desktop if you need the more powerful hardware for your games.
