Why can only get 1GB of songs on my 2GB mini-ipod?

Question

I can get 1GB worth of songs on there and then it says that it is full.

If I explore the contents there is a hidden folder called "ipod_control" which has 3 folders (called F00, F01, and F02) which is also 1GB and seems to contain duplicate copies of all my songs.

These songs are also in the folder called "music". So why has my ipod got 2 copies of every song?!

when doing with itune do it properly, more over the operating sysytem also occupies lots of space
