It's because the Anglos never would have taken to it otherwise. It is the same reason what a lot japanese anime has characters with anglo features - in short to sell it to anglos.

Some people paint him white with fair skin with brown hair, and a large go-t. But yes He would have to be olived skinned cause He is Jewish. The church isn't afraid, that's how they think Jesus looked. I don't know why they don't paint Him a different colour, you could ask a church some questions Why they think Jesus is white.

I do agree that Jesus most likely had olive skin but the reason why he is white in picture is because the spread of Christianity in Europe during 700 to 1500 AD.

I have always thought the same thing. Jesus was Jewish and he lived in the Middle East. He would have had dark hair, dark eyes and olive skin. He is always represented as a fair person - in reality he would have looked like a Middle Eastern person.

A painting is just an artist's concept or perception of what the person painted must look like, there are no photos, and he didn't model for anyone... We must not be focusing on his appearance, but on his purpose here in this life... in each of our lives... He came to redeem the world, to save us and atone for our sins... Why would it make any difference if he were white or dark in color? We just have to accept him as he is, and love him for all he did for us... follow his teachings and examples.. be more like him in every way possible... The pictures, through whatever concept the artist may have had of him, are great to have as a constant reminder and a show of our love for him.

Western Christians spread images of a European Jesus through their encounters with peoples of Africa, the Americas, Australia and parts of Asia (often through colonization), from the 16th to the 20th century. Many nonwhite regions and ethnicities have depicted Jesus in this way, sometimes routinely.

Jesus DID have olive skin - he was Jewish.
Mostly, I think, the white, anglo-saxon, european artists of the past felt necessary to make him white and therefore more universal to their audience!
But it is clearly not the case that he was white.
