Bcoz the poor pple from USA has a country without a correct name.
on the contrary think about this............United States of America..
That means all the STATES (countries) in all AMERICA. It is a name that at least another 2 countries in AMERICA have.
1.. United States of Brazil...and are in AMERICA
2..United States of Mexico...and they are in AMERICA also.
So, we can make a concourse, a competition between all the people from the 3 AMERICAS (North, Central, and South) to try to find a more original name to USA.....

This question has come up here numerous times before. People living in the United States of America have been called Americans even before their was a country here. What the heck are you going to call us? United Statesians? It's just a word. We don't have another word for this purpose that is in common parlance.

The fact that the word American is used to refer to people from the United States doesn't mean that residents of other countries in North and South America are any less residents of the Americas. If we talk about North Americans or South Americans, most educated people realize that you are talking about the people who live on that continent. Both North and South America were actually named after an Italian guy, Americus Vespucci, so I don't think we need to make so much of this word.

There's a good discussion of this issue at the site linked below.

The name of my country is The United States of America. The term "United States" refers to ANY country that is made up of a number of states that are united together. Mexico is made up of united states, just as America is. I am an American because I am from the country of America. Apart from this fact, there are also a couple of continents with similar sounding names - North America and South America. I am an American, from the country of America, which exists on the continent of North America. A Canadian would be from the country of Canada, on the continent of North America. If you need to refer to the northern parts of the country of America, you would call this area the "northern states" of America - not North America (which is the continent).

United States of America is the proper name of the country. We are officially known as United States citizens or citizens of the United States. To be called "Americans" is just an easy slang term.

If there's a real problem, I'm sure the Canadians (or Argentinians or Brazilians - both of whom are South Americans!) would eagerly speak up!

For the same reason that some idiots call English people British. Britain covers Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales as well as England, the same way that America covers everything from North America to the bottom of South America.

Basically ignorance or lazyness, to answer your question.

Because the country is called 'The United States of America,' thus making us Americans... its in the title of our country. Mexico has Mexicans, Canada has Canadians, United States of America has Americans. United Staten's doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

Well as a whole, America, Canada, Argentina, and many other countries are considered to be the Americas and to be young countries.

I think I understand your question. Yes, from Canada to Argentina is North America. But NA is a continent not a country just like all continents. Countries make up the continent. So your question is like asking why we don't call all Europeans, German or British.

I use the term South American to describe someone from - well South America! I guess we don't use North Americans because when we say American we usually mean from the States. I say Canadian when I mean Canadian and even Canadians don't like being called Americans even though they are.

I guess the same reason that most Americans refer to "England" when they mean the United Kingdom
