Do you think an online friend is the same as a real life friend? If there's almost zero chance of ever meeting in person, does it make sense to set boundaries, or is it a safe and harmless opportunity to talk to someone about whatever comes up?

Sure -- as long as everyone knows there cannot be any emotional ties. On-line friends are a terrific sounding board and some even come with "added benefits". All depends on what you're looking for. Good idea to set boundaries even with "real life friends", so of course setting with on-line makes perfect sense as well.

It would make sense to set boundaries. Perhaps those should be set as the online friendship starts. Unless you're chatting with an open minded person - then it's perfectly harmless to chat about whatever comes up.

Yes, I do think of an online friend as the same as a friend I see face to face. There's nothing I can't talk about within my life or about myself with an online. I just don't offer personal information about anyone else (without their permission). Online acquaintances and online associates are those I'm not likely to meet in person, but online friends, I will. To me, there's a difference.

I think you should be careful giving out too much information about yourself. You don't really know who's behind the other computer...

I honestly don't think an "online friend" is the same as a REAL friend. That's one of the things I don't get about myspace. Sure, someone has "125 friends"... but how many of those are REAL FRIENDS.... REAL PEOPLE that they talk to and hang out with... who are there to spend time with... who will keep you company... who will be the shoulder you cry on... etc.

It's not the same.

Not truly a friend in my opinion as you've never met. An associate perhaps but friends are real and there for you and know you very personally. You, I or anyone can be anybody we want to be on this machine and as such you need to be careful with what type of info you share and how much of what is said is truth.

I think it would be cool to have an online friend only if you are not married or in a relationship and comitting adultry. It would be cooler if eventually you became good friends and could actually meet.

Nothing wrong with an online friend. What would be wrong is lying to them or pretending to be something you're not. Treat them as you would a friend who can see you and know about your real life.

as long as you both agree that its ok, then I see no problem with it. I have many online friends that I'll never see, and honestly I feel I can be more open with them than someone I have to look in the eye.

It's a perfect opportunity to talk about anything and everything - no chance of embarassment!
