Purchase a common balance, attach a pencil to the pan holding the weights, put a piece of paper touching the pencils and balance the common balance by placing equal weights on both sides. You have made a rudimentary seismograph. If you place this on a table and shake the table, the paper will show the graph of the tremors. Calibrate the paper with pre-printed Richer scale. Here is a picture of the arrangement:

The vertical line is the paper, the Arrow is the pencil, the “U”s are the pans of the balance holding balancing weights.

How about a coffee table with a built in cooler? It would be great for bed ridden people or for storing snacks when your watching a movie. It could have a drawer or two that opens to keep food and drinks cold using either ice or electricity.

Start with a questionnaire that he passes out in school to support his focus and to find out what the kids want and need and lack...
Pose the question... " What would help you in your daily life that you do not already have?"
Then invent it! Or... find a way to make what already exists...better~
When you find out what most people need and lack in lieu of conveniences and necessities, you have the true mother of invention...

take a large nail and wrap copper coil around it and add an electrical current and that makes your own magnet, it's a very cheap and easy science fair project
