I would think that it would work the same way as it does for fish, she would lay eggs and the merman would fertilize them.

I've often wondered about that. I can only assume, if they have live young, which you know, they probably do because baby mermaids would be cute but eggs....well no, not really, that they must do it more or less the same way as sharks, or dolphins. The kind of swim along while the male inseminates the female. Dolphins apparently have sex for fun, not many species apart from human do that. I would have thought mermaids do though, so I wonder what they do about contraception?

Now this questions shows creativity at another level. Never thought about it even when i read the little mermaid, it totally didn't cross my mind on the reproduction part! Hmmm...Let's see, may be it will be a cross between the fish, man and fungal reproduction as in the male pours his gametes on the female tail and the it some how fuses, division and differentiation happens in the body and then the female forms a budding that buds out and later grows into anothe mermaid...Can you buy that?

Yeah that's a really good point...

It would make more sense if the top half was fish and the bottom half was woman. Maybe just a fishes head infact, probably wouldn't be all that good at swimming - then again who cares whether the thing can swim or not.

I would guess they have rather large eggs with the babys in them. Also the male fertalizing them.
That's what I imagined when I was little. At the time I had seen a cartoon with Arial and 2 little mermaid babies.

Maybe the Merman shoots his seed and the Mermaid catches it in her self, Genitalia may appear when in an aroused state and then they just do it normally (well as normally as a half fish creature can be!) or maybe and this is my best guest they are a-sexual!

Have you ever seen the movie Splash? In it this mermaid becomes human when she's on land. She only gets her tail if she gets wet. So if they are like that then I assume they can just mate with a human male and as long as she stays on land, all should be good....until her water breaks anyway.

HAHAHA - i think U are all wrong!!!!!!!!!
If Mermaids were to exist, it would be a mammal - not part fish - something more along the lines of dolphin or whale as the 'tail-fin' is always portrayed horizontal like a sea-mammal, not vertical like a fish! therefore they would bear young & reproduce much like a dolphin or whale (which is quite kinky, as they are into group sex, & having sex for fun like humans & monkeys "wink") ...Therefore i think i certainly have 100% answered this question & deserved the points :)

maybe the same way wales do. like is a mermaid mammal? I mean, you'd think cause her being part human. but then again, she doesn't have to come up for air like whales do...I'm gonna have to go with her laying her eggs, and the merman fertilizing them. poor little creatures.

They reproduce like any other fish in the ocean. And yes, they are real. I know. Believe me I know. They are all too real, and I wish they weren't.
