As any Bob Dylan song it is tough to interpret completely. The Joker and the Thief represent entertainer and outlaw from the society, the two sides Dylan saw within himself.

I like the Henrix version best. It was also played by Lenny Kravitz with Clapton on guitar - check that out

I think it's about the medieval times, like what goes on in a castle. I like DMB's the best.
