My baby is 5 months old and I want to start her on baby food. I'm not sure which ones are best to start out with. I know to do veggies before fruit for about a week straight before trying a new one to make sure she doesn't have allergic reactions to them.

Last night I gave her half a jar of stage 1 green beans. I wasn't sure if I could give her a whole jar or just half a jar. (she loved them by the way and wanted the whole thing). So is it just half a jar once a day or more than once a day??

Lol Dyme Diva...
I'm not starving my baby just because I gave her half a jar and she wanted more of it. I give her a bottle right after. Shes such a chub it's pretty obvious we're not keeping food from her.

I started my kids on rice cereal when they were 4 months old. The veggies I didn't start until they were 6 months old. I started with the yellow veggies first. Carrots were the first ones, then I went to the green ones.

My son has been on solids for 2 months now. We started just buying the variety packs of veggies & fruit in stage 1. For about 3 weeks, we just did one meal a day with rice cereal or oatmeal and 1 veggie or 1 fruit until we had tried them all with no allergies. You only have to wait about 3-4 days before trying a new one...not a whole week. Remember to get some sort of cereal too, because that is where they get the iron from.

Your baby will tell you how much she wants. If she's still hungry, give her more. But I would make sure she is still mostly breastfeeding or getting formula, since that's her primary nutrition. After about 3 weeks, my son started getting lunch and dinner, but he still has 4 bottles each day as well. He eats 1 jar and cereal for lunch and 1-2 jars and cereal for dinner, so we'll be moving on to stage 2 soon. Basically just read her queues. And some days she may eat more than others...it's all about exploration right now.

I have four children. If your baby is hungry, feed her. If you're concerned about her over-eating, just slow her down a little. Let her eat half, come back in a little while and try again. If she's hungry, she'll eat. If not, she won't. Cereal is usually the best place to start a baby on solids. Also, it's not necessarily veggies BEFORE fruit. Gerber makes "steps" for you to follow and all of the first step ones are fruit: apples, pears, etc. As long as you also give your baby the veggies, they are likely to eat just as well when you offer veggies as when you offer fruits. Another hint: baby food doesn't have a lot of flavor to it, especially veggies and "meals". Organic baby foods have more flavor and are more natural, so it's a nice way to go when looking at your options. If your baby can taste her food, she's more apt to eat it. You're right about the allergy thing too. Don't give babies too many new things at once, because it helps narrow down allergies, if they have any, to a specific food right away. That's much easier than trying to figure it out later.

If she wants more give her more!! ( I would not go over 1 jar) I think 2 x's a day is good and maybe if she will take it do oatmeal or rice cereal ( I cant remember which at what age) for breakfast!! My daughter is almost 11 months and she is now on reg. foods! I would feed her what she can handle but if she does not want it then that is fine too. It is common for them to like a few things and eat them all the time. My daughter loved the spaghetti when she was older!! And you seem to know everything else Good Luck!!!!!!

Do not starve your baby! She knows when her stomach is full. If she wanted the whole jar give it to her. When my son was that age he use to eat three times a day so that was about two jars of veggies and one jar of fruit not to mention his snacks throughout the day. But I started feeding him baby foods at 3 months old and stage 2 foods. Baby foods that I recommend are carrots, sweet peas, squash, bananas, custard, pears and apricots.

Let her eat as much of it as she wants. After a month or so of Stage 1, you are okay to move to stage 2. Just be sure that your daughter doesn't have any digestion problems with stage 1.
I started my daughter about 6mos. I mixed it with some rice ceareal because she had a little bit of a harder time with the smoother texture of the food.
She is now 8 mos. She loves the gerber stage 2 Sweet potatoes and corn.
We actually let her join us for the Thanks giving feast. We gave her mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes (mushed--she only has two bottom teeth) and then her daddy let her taste the pumpkin pie. She did very well with all of them.
I started my daughter kind of late on baby food. I did start giving her rice cereal at 4 mos every now and then. But she's a very healthy baby.
She even eats crackers now. I can't believe how fast they grow up!!
Good luck with yours!!

i always heard to start off with rice cereal first then when they are about 6 months start with veggies. sweet potatoes are a good veggie to start with maybe also squash. peas and green beans are the "normal" starter veggies. BUT then a few weeks ago my lactation consultant said... i didn't HAVE to feed her cereal at all that she gets all the iron she needs from my breast milk. She said i could actually just start with veggies. my daughter is almost 4 and 1/2 months old and I'm having anxieties about feeding her solids.... i don't want to lose my bond with her and I'm having a hard time coping with the fact that shes growing more independent. Good luck with solids, we'll be starting them soon!!!

First you should start her on baby Cereal. Start with Gerber or Beachnut Rice or Oatmeal for a couple of weeks, if she is ready then start with veggies, give one per week, and let her eat as much as she wants. Then go for the fruits. Babies love squash and sweet potatoes, the sweetness of these veggies get them loving it.

I made all my childrens' food. They started eating about that age too. Cereal mainly that was home-made. Barley or rice ground up and sometimes oatmeal. Anyway in about a month or so try avacado, just cut it and mash it and bananas they are great. The Avacado has lots of good fats in it that are good for brain development. My daughter ate avacado almost every day it was her fave. No special machines or stuff needed to do it just a knife to cut it and a fork to mash it.

Left a good link/book info for you that i leave for everyone. Its called Super Baby Food book its great.
