What's the alternative? There will be no sudden changes to the situation in the U.S.

Pack up and go where a better life awaits you?

Shout the injustices from the rooftops - because you know that the squeaky wheel gets the grease?

Preserve the status quo by inactivity?

Make lemonade out of the lemon handed you and try to improve your lot (and thereby African groups collectively) by a program of self-improvement on an individual level?

Tears don't turn no gears........................

There's only so much if anything you can blame on the "man". Yes we have a high rate of poverty, incarcerations, unemployment, and child mortality. This in my opinion comes from the way you are raised and so on. In some situations it is harder to rise above certain situations.

I don't blame slavery for anything. It happend and is done. But on the other hand as an example: Say there was a race/marathon. "Whites" had a 400 year head start. Where does that place the "Blacks"? The race is not over by far, and we do have a ways to go. I just think people have a black and white opinion of the question that was asked and there is a lot of gray area.

Sometimes flat out people don't want to work or get ahead. Black, white, and in between.

Assimilation is what the Native Americans (who owned the land here, until setllers took it away) were forced into. And the reparations received were to live on reservations. And they are dying from alcoholism and poverty everyday. So I guess you don't have it so bad. BTW, if I went to the ghetto, opened a business and hired those who live in the ghetto, would they show up to work? Would they respect me as a boss? Would they feel entitled to steal from me? Would they quit to avoid having to pay child support or to stop receiving welfare? The answer is no. They did not. So I can only meet a person half way. Take responsibility for yourself, go out and inspire inner city youth (you know, because it is socio economics that keeps a person down, not race) volunteer time at schools, or after school programs, take care of yourself and lead by example. But i have a feeling you are doing just fine, and trying to spark some racist sentiment on this forum. And you would be part of the problem, if that is the case. Or maybe you still want to be owned, and have others make the defcisions for you. Perhaps the 'slave mentality' is not just a white issue...

Yes, just as soon as they determine to live for today and not yesterday. If you feel stigmatized what are you doing about it? Have you done the hard work necessary to rise above it? Life isn't about fairness, it's about what we choose to do with our lives to make them better. If you are waiting for some magical person to come along and sweep this all away you're going to be waiting for a very long time. If you are waiting for the government to make reparations for history you will be waiting for a very long time. If you take your life into your own hands and work hard to rise above where you started, you will at least be helping yourself while you are waiting. I'm a little confused though, are you from an African country or are you American? Regardless, if you feel this strongly that these questions need to be addressed then take advantage of your college system, get a law degree and work toward helping those you see as being held down. Waiting for someone else to do this for you will again cause you to be waiting for a very long time. Be part of the solution you seek, not part of the contingent who whine but take no action.

Stop blaming dumb decisions and laziness on Slavery. It has nothing to do with poverty. All people in the USA have the same chance at wealth and happiness. Those who choose not to accept it and ask for help because there great, great, grandpa was a slave are just plain lazy. Stop trying to make the African heritage your excuse for Gangs, poor dress and racism. Look to the leaders in this country that are African American. They will tell you that you need to make it on your own like they did. I find no correlation between your stats and slavery whatsoever.

how can you say stigma when others especially whites have been in slavery one hell of a lot more often and longer than any black, and no one ever thinks of it except the blacks who want sympathy and some freebie's, ask your self why is it that people from other countries who have had it worse than any slave ever did , they were in concentration camps beaten their families killed tortured etc yet they come to America and very often very successful yet the blacks live in the ghettos claim they can't find a job, poor me??? when for the last 50 years they have had preferential hiring etc, com on tell this sh;; to some one who will believe it,the highest mortality rate is due to their drug use and neglect of their children and nothing to do with social standards.
one othe thought after reading some answers, did segregation work for the betterment of our country? we were pretty advanced over other nations until the 60s when the Kennedys forced integration , we came in in 5th place this year in technology and lower in science , math engineering etc, so tell me how integration worked or helped.?

Hello. This answer is coming from a white 14 years old male to a black man. I don't think that black peoples are still "slaves" for the white. I hate that black people still think that. Black people used to be slaves in the past, and I'm against it. I think that Rosa Parks is a great fighter for the"Black" people rights, and I think she did a great thing to stand up for her rights against the white people. These listed in your question are just a coincidence.
Highest poverty rates in the West: Maybe the black people in n the west are just not working.

Highest Unemployment in the West:Maybe black people in the west are just not willing to work.

I hope this clarifies your opinion of black people that are being treated as slaves.

Do you seriously think that the stigma of slavery explains the examples you site in your question?

Caucasians have the stigma of conquest and bigotry, Germans have the stigma of WWII, Scottish people are all drunks, the French are cowards, Jews are money hounds, Polish people are idiots and on and on and on it goes.

Stop trying to scape goat your problems with some kind of stigma or label given you by ignorant people and accept some of the responsibility for your own actions, pull yourself up, be proud and productive and get on with your life.

History should be just that.. history! As long as slavery is used as a justification or an excuse for their situations in life it will remain in the spotlight..Its an old song n dance that needs to be ended in order to bring modern life into view for the future generations.
